Job Title: Director of the Lake Bluff Public Library

FT/PT: Full Time

Salary: $105,000, based on qualifications and experiences

The Board of Trustees of the Lake Bluff Public Library seeks a dynamic and visionary leader to serve as their next Director. The Director will provide oversight for all aspects of operations including strategic initiatives, budgeting, capital planning, and community outreach. The ideal candidate has a passion for public service and a commitment to fostering an inclusive, collaborative environment. The Board and Staff and want a leader willing to serve as an ambassador for the Library.

The Director will have the opportunity to make a lasting impact by shaping the future of the Library through the development of a new strategic plan and the creation of a long-term facilities improvement program. The Director will also serve as a liaison to the Lake Bluff History Museum, as the two organizations manage a shared building.

Key responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Management: Supervise, strengthen, and inspire a dedicated team of professionals.
  • Strategic Planning & Development: Oversee the design and implementation of long-term goals that align with the community’s needs. Monitor services and initiatives, to ensure ongoing improvement.
  • Budget & Financial Management: Develop budgeting, financial planning, and resource allocation. Ensure efficient use of available funds.
  • Community Engagement: Build strong relationships with schools, businesses, and community organizations. Engage with local leaders to better understand their needs.
  • Program & Services Development: Design and oversee offerings that entertain, and promote literacy, lifelong learning, and civic engagement.
  • Facilities Management: Ensure that the building is accessible, safe, and welcoming. Steer ongoing building maintenance and establish a plan for future improvements.
  • Advocacy & Public Relations: Act as the public face of the Library. Advocate for and raise awareness of the importance of public libraries.

Qualifications:

A Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program.
7 years of experience in libraries, with at least 5 years in a supervisory role.
Strong knowledge of operations, budgeting, services, and technologies.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage and collaborate with a wide-variety of groups.
Proven leadership skills, including team building and staff development.
Experience with community engagement and advocacy.

The position offers a chance to work with a dedicated team. It also provides a competitive salary and generous benefits, including paid vacation and participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund. This is an in-person and on-site position. It will require some evenings or weekends. Occasional work from home hours are supported.
