First Floor Facelift: New Computer Table Installed
Thanks to a generous donation from the Lake Bluff Public Library Foundation, last week, the Library installed a brand new computer table to support adult computer users on the first floor of the building. Kathy Meierhoff, President of the Lake Bluff Public Library Foundation, says "The Lake Bluff Library Foundation is delighted to underwrite the cost of the computer table for the public access computer center. Not only is this an update in furnishing and technology, it is an important improvement in both access and security for our community. "
Designed by Library Furniture International, this new workstation features brushed stainless steel finishes, frosted privacy dividers and tabletop surfaces that match the computer tables and the Stroh Reading Room. Built-in cord management systems provide a sophisticated clean look, while also reducing tripping hazards and increasing safety for patrons of all ages. The new computer table also provides increased visibility and ambient light, as well as improved sightlines for staff to ensure everyone's safety. While the new table is a smaller footprint than the larger study carrels used previously, Library Director Renee Grassi states that the amount of available workspace for computer users has, in fact, increased.
This is not the first time the Lake Bluff Public Library Foundation has supported building and facility improvements for Lake Bluff Library. Last year, the Library opened the Carole S. and Alfred Stroh Reading Room. This construction project, funded in part by the Lake Bluff Public Library Foundation, created a a dedicated quiet space that features comfortable lounge seating surrounding a gas fireplace. In June of 2023, the Library hosted a reception celebrating the life and legacy of Carole “Cal” Stroh -- the namesake of the room -- and her many contributions to Lake Bluff Public Library as a former Library Board Trustee.
This first floor design refresh is one of several recent improvements that Lake Bluff Public Library has made to improve the experience of library visitors. A recent donation from the Friends of the Lake Bluff Public Library allowed the Library to replace its dilapidating first and second floor study tables, also adding reupholstered study chairs. These new study tables, chairs and the new computer workstation were all designed to align with the furniture originally purchased for the Stroh Reading Room. Library Director Renee Grassi states "The goal has been to upgrade adult spaces and offer a more consistent and enjoyable aesthetic throughout, while also improving customer experience with more effective and useful furniture. Also, having matching furniture throughout library spaces gives the Library considerable design flexibility in the future."
